The Path to Healthy: Insanity Day 1 - Fit Test

By thepathtohealthy

Today is the day.

Started out my morning cooking myself an egg white tortilla with a little bit of cheese, it ended up being around 238 calories. The problem I am having right now when it comes to food is that I bought all my food before I decided to try out Insanity, so I don't really have too many healthy foods. I don't want to waste the food I have right now, so I am trying to eat as healthy as I can with what I have. Which leaves me with the same three things, and I won't go shopping until next week so my food intake might not be too healthy, but it's all I have. I will still only eat 1800 calories a day.

I made the mistake of not eating again before my workout, I ate a little bit over three hours before starting the Insanity DVD, so I think it would have been better if I ate two hours before because I felt a little bit too hungry before the workout.

Today was the Fit Test. I didn't think it would be too hard, but I was beyond wrong.

Shaun T starts you out with a little warm up, running in pace, jumping jacks, and a few more exercises to get the heart pumping. To be honest I was a little bit tried after that, but I had no idea what I was in for.

The Fit Test is an eight exercise workout: Switch Kicks, Power Jacks, Power Knees, Power Jumps, Globe Jumps, Suicide Jumps, Push-up Jacks, and Low Plank Oblique. You had to do each exercise as much as you can for one minute, one minute rest in between (I think between Suicide Jumps and Push Up Jacks it was a two minute break), and move on to the next exercise. The idea is to do the Fit Test every 15 days and record your results to improve each time the test is done.

Switch Kicks was a good start, and the first 30 seconds I was feeling good, but slowly I was slowing down. I completed 46 sets of this. At the end of this I was tried but still okay.

Power Jacks is when I really was starting to get tried. This was the beginning of the jumping. I have never jumped so much in my life. I was able to do 40 of these within a minute.

The next thing was Power Knees, which I think was my best workout of the eight. I was really tried but Shaun T was pushing me to give it my all and I really did. I was able to get 62 sets.

Power Jumps, more jumping which I wasn't looking forward too. At this point I was gasping for air but still trying to give it my all. I ended at 27.

Whoever invited Globe Jumps I wanted to kill. Jumping around four times to complete a set was exhausting. I was surprised when I squeezed 10 of those out of me.

Suicide jumps I was only able to get 19 out of me.

Push-up Jacks in the beginning I was actually surprised that I got the first 10 rather quickly, it was the last 10 that I was gasping for air. At my one minute break I literally just sat down and just stayed that way until the next set.

Low Plank Oblique I knew I was almost done so I was pushing my way though this exercise. I was able to get the last 30 in me before laying down in completion. I finished it.

I was able to finish the cool down, when it was finally over and the commercials played at the end of the workout I just laid down on the ground and tried to get my heart rate down. This was only the 25 minute Fit Test, when I start the real work outs they will be 45 minutes. I knew Insanity was going to be hard, but actually doing it and knowing that it will be hard is a totally different feeling.

A friend of mine stopped by a few hours later and did the Fit Test on her own, at the end of her Fit Test she did just about as good as I did, so it was nice that we were at the same level. She decided that she wanted to also do Insanity, so we are going to do it together. I also have one other friend who wants to get in on Insanity so it will be great to have the support to be able to do these workouts.

Now that I am really starting Insanity I need to remember to eat. I need to eat five meals a day, so far I have had three, and I need to eat another 863 calories. I also need to keep remembering to drink more water. This eating five time a day is not as easy as I thought it would be, but I know I need to eat enough calories to burn though the workouts each day. I'm sure once I find my own groove it will be easier to do.

I have included a "before" picture of myself, and will be adding a new picture every 15 days, along with the results from each Fit Test. I have been debating if I should weight myself every 15 days or not weight myself until the end. I'm not sure which one would be better, and I am not sure if I could not weight myself for 60 days. My weight and measurements are below:

  • Weight: 132.6 (gained a pound since yesterday, don't know how)
  • Waist: 32 inches
  • Hips: 39 inches
  • Chest: 32.25 inches
  • Right arm: 10.5 inches
  • Left arm: 10.5 inches
  • Right leg: 20 inches
  • Left leg: 19.5 inches

I won't do my measurements again until I am done with all 60 days, but weighting myself is still up for debate. I'm actually looking forward to the next Fit Test. I'm looking forward to see how my body changes as I go on with this experience. My goal is to lose anywhere between 7 - 12 pounds, but as far as my measurements I would like to fit back down to a size 4 - 5, right now I am a size 8. I'm not really too worried about my measurements as long as I feel great.

I am starting up my Beachbody profile so if you want to be work out buddies please find me on there (link below). I know the real work starts tomorrow, and I will give a rundown of it all.

Until then...

How often should I weight myself during Insanity?

  • Every day
  • Every 15 days
  • Not until the end of the 60 days

I did P90X and then Insanity. It was a great experience. I got much much healthier and fitter afterwards. Good luck with it. I weighed myself once a week.

I don't really know if weighing daily or less often is better. I have been weighing daily, first thing in the morning. My weight has fluctuated but over all the trend has been down. P90X is a great program. I am going through the first round using the "lean" version. I plan to use the strength training version on my next pass. Best of luck with "Insanity."
